The City of Takoma Park is accepting applications for emergency grants to local small businesses affected by the COVID-19 emergency. The Citywide Small Business Mini-Grant Program has been established to provide grants of up to $3,000.

Salon Moves from Georgia Avenue to Bonifant Location
Salon Zoma has moved from its Georgia Avenue location to 919 Bonifant St. on the ground floor of The Bonifant apartments. Owner Fasika Kebede opened her first location as an Aveda “concept salon” in 2010, she said, offering Aveda’s environmentally friendly products exclusively. The new shop continues that concept.

New Theater Company Announced in Takoma Park
Two Takoma Park residents have launched a new nonprofit theater group and announced the inaugural production of the company. Co-directors Steve Quintilian and Julie Lloyd started Encore Theater Company and will produce “Next to Normal,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical as the group’s premier production.

Metro Riders, Local Drivers Face Closures Again This Weekend
Metro riders and local drivers will again face closed stations and a major detour this weekend as Purple Line work continues near the Silver Spring Transit Center. Colesville Road will again be closed between Wayne Avenue and East-West Highway from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Navarro Announces Amendment to Community Policing Bill
Activists scored a victory earlier this month when the Montgomery County Council discussed an amendment to a proposed community policing bill that would, among other things, remove language calling for an expansion of the county’s school resource officer program.

Crowds Gather to Watch Purple Line Work
Small crowds gathered periodically Sunday to watch the work underway to raise massive girders over Colesville Road for the Purple Line. Colesville will remain closed between Wayne Ave and East-West Highway until Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6 a.m.

Three Metro Stations Closed for Holiday Weekend; County Offices Shut Down Monday
The Silver Spring, Forest Glen and Wheaton Metro stations will close during the upcoming holiday weekend, while the county has announced closures for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the station closures due to Purple Line integration work.
