Takoma Park Receives State Grants to Support Redevelopment, Housing Opportunities
The City of Takoma Park has been awarded two state grants to support redevelopment and housing opportunities, according to a press release. The Housing and Community Development Department was awarded a $500,000 revitalization award from the National Capital Strategic Economic Development Fund initiative.

Demolition Begins on Former Park and Planning Headquarters Site
Demolition has begun on the site of the former headquarters of the county’s Park and Planning departments at 8787 Georgia Ave. in preparation for a new development project. The county chose partners Bozzuto and StonebridgeCarras in 2013 for a two-part redevelopment effort that included this site.

County: Renters Eviction Protections Still in Place Despite Federal Order
The county has issued guidance reminding renters that they continue to have eviction protection despite a recent federal court decision. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s modified CDC Order for a Temporary Halt on Residential Evictions was vacated by a federal judge.

Number of County’s Homeless Dropped 14% From 2020
The number of homeless people in Montgomery County dropped 14%, from 670 people in 2020 to 577 in 2021, according to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Point-in-Time survey.

Kaldi’s Rooftop Being Remodeled, Enclosed
The rooftop of Kaldi’s Social House is being remodeled and will be completely enclosed, according to owner Tsega Hailemariam. The roof has been an issue with Thayer & Spring apartment residents unhappy about the noise from Kaldi’s, as well as businesses along Georgia Avenue, Hailemariam said.
